Eskimo Recordings – The White Collection

As it enters its 20th year of existence Belgian label Eskimo Recordings shows no sign of slowing down or scaling back its ambition. To kickstart this auspicious year the label returns with The White Collection’, 8th release in its acclaimed ‘Colour Series’ and a globe-trotting compilation featuring 14 tracks of leftfield electronic music drawn from 9 different countries.

Opening the compilation we head to the Russian Republic of Tatarstan where producer Anton Firtich, aka Antenna, has been steadily making a name for himself with a series of stunning cosmic disco releases. ‘Song for Udmurtia’, named for the region where both Anton’s wife and his cat came from, builds on that reputation. A breezy piece of laid back electronica perfectly positioned somewhere between the sophisticated lounge music of Herb Alpert and the Scandi-sounds of producers, and Eskimo alumni, like Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas.

Heading west we find ourselves in the Greek capital of Athens where Eskimo veteran NTEIBINT joins forces with vocalist Matina Sous Peau for ‘Back to the Roots of Love’. Well known for his sumptuous reinterpretation of classic disco sounds, ‘Back to the Roots of Love’ sees NTEIBINT widen his sonic palette, the result a stunning number that combines pop and disco sounds with the jazzier end of 90s Broken Beat.

Returning home, Gent 4-piece Omar Dahl provides the first entry in the compilation from a Belgian band with ‘Oscar’s Walk’. Inspired by Arabic and Balkan sounds and even a little of the widescreen cinematic feel of Ennio Morricone’s Spaghetti Western soundtracks, ‘Oscar’s Walk’ combines mournful brass and string instruments and shuffling beats to create a wonderfully hypnotic 5 minutes of genre-defying music.

Having previously provided 2 remixes for Eskimo much tipped Australian producer The Oddness makes his full debut on the label with ‘Get It Together’. Another dose of psychedelic, dub flavoured electronica that keeps the tempo low and the strangeness dialled up, ‘Get It Together’s chugging beat provides the perfect backdrop for myriad sounds to rattle and reverb their way into the cosmic ether.

Tel Aviv’s Middle Sky Boom makes a welcome return to Eskimo with the aptly titled ‘Dreamy Route’. A hazy, atmospheric jam featuring gauzy vocals, insistent looping chimes and textures that drift over the stuttering beat, the perfect accompaniment to a cocktail, or two, on a golden Mediterranean beach as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon.

Back to Belgium and this time an up & coming producer, Julian Hival, who recently made his debut on Traum Schallplatten. Drawing inspiration everywhere from Berlin underground techno to alienating downtempo compositions Julian’s contribution to ‘The White Collection’, ‘Lavender’, is a sprawling epic filled with eerie menace that recalls the likes of composer John Carpenter’s synth heavy 80s soundtracks.

With just a handful of releases to his name Sweden’s Paresse has already been tipped for big things by the likes of DJ Mag in the UK and ‘Angelus Redux’, a club ready number fuelled by a percussive heavy beat, bubbling bass line and topped with sparkling synth arpeggios and the kind of breathy French vocal that ecstatic moments in dark spaces were made for, shows just why so many have him on their radar.

One of the many highlights from Eskimo’s recent releases was the debut EP from Belgian producer Transistorcake. Ending a 5-year hiatus since his debut was picked up by Soulwax for their GTA station, ‘The Future Plans EP’ featured a set of evocative and ultimately euphoric electronica. This ‘Alternate Take’ of ‘Future Plan I’ from Transistorcake himself showcases his full live band and features a more improvised feel to the lead synth melody and driving motorik drums.

Heading west to San Francisco’s Bay Area Eskimo welcomes back Michoacan after a 7-year absence. Making up for lost time the producer, whose back catalogue also includes releases on labels such as DFA and Bear Entertainment, delivers a fine return in the shape of ‘I Can See’, a rousing disco-punk-pop number sure to find a home in both sticky-floored indie clubs and tropical disco beach parties alike.

If records were judged on name alone then Tonarunur’s ‘Relatively Safe Horseback Riding’ would be a shoo-in for all 2020’s end of year lists already. As it is the Icelandic producer’s Eskimo debut more than stands on its musical merits too and if ever a song has better captured the fun and excitement of a ride on a magical flying horse via the medium of sparkling synth-heavy space disco then we’ve yet to hear it (and of course would love to).

One of the new generation of Scandi-disco artists to have emerged in the past couple of years Bergen’s Cavego follows up a series of hugely acclaimed releases for Eskimo with the euphoric, bouncing, ‘Alfred (Og Vennene Hans)’. Harnessing the power of his enviable synth collection to dramatic effect Cavego delivers a more club focussed effort than previous releases without losing any of the cinematic feel that made his debut EP so entrancing.

Already a club hit Russian duo Radial Gaze’s ‘Totem Echoes’ makes a much-welcomed reappearance on ‘The White Collection’. An eclectic mix of disorientating synths, tribal chants and industrial percussion it’s a stunning release from this nascent partnership that recalls the like of Moscoman and fellow countrymen Simple Symmetry.

Having previously released on Eskimo with Middle Sky Boom, Eliezer teams up with fellow Tel Aviv producer Asaf Sanzer, aka Rina, for ‘San Sebastian’. Recalling the likes of Red Axes and Curses ‘San Sebastian’ filters Middle Eastern melodies through post-punk, house, disco and techno to dramatic effect, the end result in the kind of track that could equally soundtrack a beach party in Tel Aviv or a Goth basement club in Leeds.

Ending the compilation on a sweet, sweet blissful high Eskimo turn to another Nordic star in waiting, Boblebad. Built around a simple yet instantly addictive acoustic guitar refrain and sympathetic beat, ‘Kontemplasjon’ subtly builds as new elements, swirling synths, softly caressing strings and additional guitar parts, glide in and out of the mix gently melting away all your troubles.

Since launching in the year 2000, Gent based Eskimo Recordings has gone onto become one of the leading electronic music labels in the world releasing genre-defining artist albums and compilations from the likes of Satin Jackets, Aeroplane, Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas, The Glimmers, Optimo, Psychemagik and many more. Using the platform of fabric and FABRICLIVE that the London club have lovingly nurtured over the past 20 years, fabric Records present the past and future with 20 artists across 20 tracks, for the 20th Anniversary celebration of the beating heart of EC1.

1999: the beginning of the story. 1,000 weekends and 3,000 events, together with a seminal CD series that wrapped up last year with closing instalments from fabric residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis with club founder Keith Reilly, alongside London underground innovators Burial & Kode9 for FABRICLIVE. This special 20th Anniversary release reflects the history of the club from the very beginning to the current crop of residents. Here you’ll find artists who helped shape the sound of the club, grew up in the club, have been inspired by the club and have become part of the fabric family.

FABRICLIVE represents the finest in dubstep, drum & bass, jungle, breaks and experimental beats. Houndstooth’s Special Request leads the charge in trademark style, opening the floor to Friday night luminaries Source Direct and J Majik. Shackleton and Pinch & Trim started playing the club during the birth of the UK dubstep scene and give a taste of the hugely disparate evolution of bass music. Daniel Avery and B.Traits show off their dancefloor versatility, while Rupture co-founder Mantra plants a flag for London’s vibrant musical future. Closing are two of the club’s longest associates Groove Armada and original FABRICLIVE resident James Lavelle as UNKLE.

fabric has been responsible for nurturing the underground London house and techno scene, inspiring and revolutionising the clubbing landscape by confidently proving that you don’t have to book commercial acts to be a success. The breadth of talent here displays the far reaching arms of the night – with an opening spread of melodic techno from Nina Kraviz, the shuddering electro of Steffi, and evolving experimental house of Margaret Dygas. New resident IMOGEN veers things in a darker direction towards Cassy’s pumping house and Marcel Dettmann’s classic late-night techno. Anastasia Kristensen drives ahead while Houndstooth’s Call Super takes things down a deeper notch with a track reminiscent of many a classic night in room 3, and Maya Jane Coles steps up with a playful slice of house. British dance music pioneer Sasha closes out on a euphoric high with layers of building vocal and melody.

Fresh off the back of their hundredth mix CD, which concluded the longstanding format of one of the most important mix chronicles in electronic music, fabric records reset the clock with the inaugural chapter of their new series: fabric presents. Rising to the occasion is none other than seminal British producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Bonobo.

‘fabric presents’ reimagines the iconic mix series into a quarterly subscription, expanding on the roster of artists involved and upgrading the contents of the package. For the first time, listeners will be provided with full length individual tracks from each mix. The CD and Vinyl packages will also feature accompanying digital files of the music, without losing the beloved physical ownership of the original format – no more trawling the web for downloads, then!

The artists invited to participate in this series will reflect the full calendar of nights at fabric, including the more recent ‘Forms’ events, new midweek programming and festival tie-ins; not forgetting the iconic FABRICLIVE and Saturday night parties. This permits a broader musical spectrum, representing the diversity of programming that sustains fabric’s reputation as a leading source of world class bookings.

A fitting testament to this broadened musical horizon, Bonobo is an artist who transcends genre – initially exploring elements of instrumental hip-hop, electronica and ambient with live instrumentation before going on to enjoy an illustrious career with a sea of collaborators ranging from Erykah Badu and Andreya Triana to Rhye and Nick Murphy. His highly textural aesthetic translates seamlessly from an orchestrated live show to sought-after DJ gigs, which lend to his status as a tastemaker and afford him a loyal following around the world.

Bonobo’s track choices for the first ‘fabric presents’ mix reflect his penchant for expansive textures and intricate structures. Employing the multi-instrumental arrangements of his own work he builds a clear narrative across 74 minutes of house, techno, electronica and breakbeat. Each track exudes character, allowing animated melodies to wander and develop, all the while grounded by an acute sense of harmonic progression and rhythmic precision. Unheard material from Bonobo and his Barakas alias, as well as exclusives from Poté and Houndstooth mainstay Throwing Snow sit alongside a glistening 2004 house gem from Âme, euphoric breakbeat from Will Saul and a peak time remix from Laurent Garnier to name a few, all topped off by an entrancing 90s ambient classic from John Beltran.

‘fabric presents’ expands on the winning formula of its predecessor, introducing a more open musical palette without losing sight of its past. As the first entry to this new chapter, Bonobo’s mix fuses disparate sonic wanderings into one vivid storyboard, merging different timelines into a seamless narrative and ushering in an exciting new era for the label, nightclub and mix series.

Back To Mine: Nightmares on Wax

Famed mix compilation series Back To Mine makes a triumphant return in 2019 to celebrate the 20th anniversary with the indomitable Nightmares on Wax the first to share his personal collection of music for after hours grooving.

2018 was a defining year for Nightmares on Wax. He kicked it off with the release of his latest album ‘Shape The Future’, seen by critics and fans as another classic in his illustrious, near three decade career of releasing records. He’s toured the world playing his biggest headline shows to date in all the major cities, dropped remixes from some of electronic music’s finest including Moodymann and Ron Trent, done a BBC Radio 1 Essential mix and recently broke the world record for the highest altitude DJ set, on a charity ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The mountain top solitude of George Evelyn’s Ibiza home is a far cry from his old life back in Leeds when every weekend it was always back to his at the end of the night. “I had a huge basement so what else could I do but stick a mega sound system down there and convert it into a nightclub?” With a childhood drenched in his dad’s jive and swing collection and a disco dancing champion for a sister, music was always going to be the life journey for our Nightmares on Wax legend. Founded in his home city of Leeds, the last three decades has witnessed Evelyn embark on an extraordinary eight album experimentation exploring everything from downbeat, electro, hip hop, soul, classical, reggae, funk, rock and everything in between. From the finest low ceiling city dives to six figure festival fields, there has been no corner untouched in the world that hasn’t received the Nightmares On Wax audio treatment.

“I always hoped that when the time was right I would be asked to do a Back To Mine release and so when the call came there was absolutely no hesitation. It’s an iconic, timeless series that conjures up so many happy memories of listening to the albums at people’s houses after the club, chilled car journeys driving through the countryside, middle of the night city screeches, pre DJ set psyche up sessions and hot summer days on the beach. I was lucky enough to think about my track selection in some incredible locations including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and the jungle and sands of Bali, all of which gave me a lot of time and space to reflect on my tunes and deliver a mix I am delighted with.

Although the series is often associated with chilled vibes, I wanted my Back To Mine mix to show both sides of my music. Of course Nightmares on Wax is known for delivering downtempo beats, but I’m also known for rocking the dancefloor…which is exactly what you are going to get if you come back to mine. I call it my ‘mini crack on’ – which is when you don’t want to go to bed just yet and still want to get into the groove. Naturally, the 13 tracks – including three exclusive to this mix – are impeccably mixed and blended, as you’d expect from a DJ and collector of George’s pedigree. His selection includes a strong representation from his roots in Northern England. Opening with respected Manchester soul duo Children of Zeus, Hull’s Steve Cobby provides his own ‘Lefthanded Books’ featuring Crazy P’s Danielle Moore and also introduces his chuggy-disco project Chieftain. NOW’s recent single ‘Look Up’ makes a welcome appearance and the producer also gifts the mix with an exclusive in the form of brand new track ‘Goodship’.

Moving internationally; there’s Greek producer Dim Zach who doffs a cap to Imagination on the synth-heavy ‘Innocence’, US-born/Colombian based Afro/Latin/disco/funk producer Bosq, Italy’s Massimo Vanoni with the slo-mo funk ‘Exciting Groove’, the deep and jazzy ‘Gotta Have It’ by Berlin’s Soulphiction side project SBM and two tracks by New Zealander Ladi6. There are more exclusives with Creative Principle ‘Caught In The Middle’ and NOW’s own remix of Fat Freddy’s Drop rounding off a formidable Back To Mine mix.

The first volume of Back To Mine was released in February 1999 by Nick Warren and it went on to include editions by Groove Armada, Orbital, New Order, Roots Manuva and Mercury Rev. The compilations are based on what the artist would play at home after a night out, rather than as part of a nightclub session – tagged “a personal collection for after-hours grooving”.

On why he’s decided to reboot Back To Mine after ten years, and 20 since it launched, Sean Brosnan (owner of parent company Material) explains: “I grew up listening to the Back To Mine albums, so I’m so happy to be able to bring the series back to life for a new generation. When we discussed who we could ask to compile the first edition of the new era, my immediate thought was Nightmares on Wax. It ticks so many boxes for me and I think this mix is yet another timeless Back To Mine to add to the many that have come before.”

NICK WARREN’S The Soundgarden – ADE Special

Giving a platform to emerging artists has long been a goal of Nick Warren’s. The legendary DJ and producer has been championing new music for decades, and now he’s brought together eight of the planet’s finest emerging producers for The Soundgarden’sinaugural eight-trackADE Special.

In the words of the man himself, “these are some of the secret weapons that have been rocking my sets over the past few months, squarely aimed at the dancefloor and for your dancing pleasure”, and here among the more established artists are some of the finest of the new school of producers who are bringing new life and vitality to the Progressive House and Melodic Techno scenes.

First up is Argentinian EmiGalvan, who applies the knowledge he’s attained through years of studio craft to create a richly musical summery soundscape – and one that’s full of hope and low-end thrust – in the form of the groovy ‘Synchronicity’. Next up is the stark and distilled imaginings of Verlk, using a vocal sample in ‘Alias’ to great effect to create a mesmerising theme tune to a film that was never made.

Frankie Mburst onto the scene in 2015 and now finds himself signed to the likes of Superordinate, Massive Harmony and Balkan Connection SA; and, if ‘Otro Mundo’ is anything to go by, he has the potential to become one of the greats. Julian Natesis another emerging talent making his debut on The Soundgarden. ‘Seven Ways’ is a smooth, well imagined, and wild ride into the peak time hours – this is a guy on the up.

Argentinian supremo Manu Fadds to his already impressive back catalogue with the dreamy ‘Digital Kiss’, while fellow countryman Memory(ARG) (hot from his Sudbeat appearance) reminds us why he’s currently such an in-demand producer with the bumpy Eastern promise of ‘Borderline’.

Next up, JJSalinastakes us on a jazzy ride, and one that’s filled with bubbling synths and catchy hooks, with his brand-new track ‘X23’. To complete this ADE Special, the Polish DJ and producer otherwise known as Tuxedounleashes his alter ego, Fluente. ‘Lasting Generation’is emotive, utterly hypnotic and perfect for any time of night.

It’s an impressively varied package, and one that’s been carefully curated to highlight the very best of the Progressive House and Melodic Techno scenes from every corner of the globe. No matter what your tastes may be, there’s guaranteed to be something for you on The Soundgarden’s ADE Special.

If the sound of their ADE Special is getting you excited, then you’re in luck: The Soundgarden is hosting two special showcases at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event. The first, a collaboration with Flying Circus and Sudbeat – and featuring the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Audiofly, Nicolas Rada, Tripswitchand Interaxxis – takes place at Thuishaven on Thursday 18 October, and is set to serve as the perfect start to what promises to be a jam-packed weekend of quality electronic music.

Then, as soon as the curtain has fallen on their epic Thuishaven show, Nick Warren and Hernan Cattaneo’s attention will turn to Friday 19 October and The Soundgarden x Sudbeat Boat Party, which will be an all-day affair featuring a special back-to-back set from the two electronic music titans themselves.

Balance presents Uone

One of the most hotly-tipped leaders of the new school, Uone follows in the footsteps of Kölsch, Patrice Baumel, and Darius Syrossian to deliver a stunning two-part mix for the Balance Series that was two-and-a-half years in the making, and is composed entirely of his own material.

Not limited by boundaries, nor borders, Uone truly is a global citizen. Having spent more than a decade living a nomadic existence, he has soaked up an array of influences and cultures whilst searching the globe for the best parties and most inspiring, like-minded folk along the way.

His career has naturally ascended in this period, highlighted by appearances at Burning Man’s Robot Heart Stage, Fusion Festival, Oregon Eclipse, Secret Garden Party and Boom, all being an integral part of his journey. His production profile continues to rise as well, with releases on labels like Stil Vor Talent, Sol Selectas, Katermukke and his own imprint Beat & Path consistently showing his ability for creating classy, hypnotic slices of deep house and techno.

For his superb debut for Balance, he’s distilled these globe-trotting experiences into a two-part mix, that bears his distinctive sonic fingerprint throughout the 21-track work. Indeed, every track comes from Uone’s production studio, whether it be an original, remix, or collaboration, this sees him going above and beyond the usual mix CD remit to create something truly special. The Balance compilation series also provided an important formative touchstone in his musical education, with his inclusion in the cannon making for a pleasing full circle. His twin mixes feature reworks of progressive house and trance classics (PQM, Jam & Spoon) and references to his home country’s thriving scene from his nascent years via his re-work of the highly-revered, once-mighty electronic band, Infusion.

Collaboration is a defining factor here with the majority of the tracks created in partnership with other esteemed producers. “I love the diversified outcome of these deeper explorations with more hands and minds involved” he explains. Uone sees the collaborative process as being equivalent to that of working as part of a band.

“Collaboration is something that I feel has been lost in production with the electronic age. Back in the day the best magic was produced in bands with people coming together and weaving the collective vibe into one sound.”

With this ethos, Uone has mastermind collaborations with the likes of Jay Haze (aka Fuckpony), Adam Freeland, Mihai Popoviciu, Mojo Filter, Jamie Stevens, Jonas Saalbach and Flow & Zeo along the way, making for an acutely diverse melting pot of ideas.

The first disc slowly builds from mystical vocal excursions using organic instrumentation, which eases us in before the metallic bass tones of Animal Kingdom alongside DJ Schwa raises the intensity. The rhythms switch from techno to house as the pumping groove of his and Andreas Henneberg’s remix of Infusion’s Spike A Drink sends the mix into the next gear. Tribal undertones and Junior Vasquez ‘90s flavour creep in on his rework of PQM’s You Are Sleeping with Out of Sorts, with the duo’s second collaboration with Jay Haze on vocals, Bongo Porn, continuing the frenzied theme. The first of two Jam & Spoon reworks, which came about after Uone met the former duo’s Rolf El Mar on an artist transfer at a festival, throbs pleasingly before an excellent remix of Schlepp Geist’s Those Days by Flow & Zeo brings us to an ethereal crescendo.

The second disc aims directly at the dance floor, opening with the brooding power of Uone & Danny Bonnici’s remix of Luke Chable’s classic The Shepherd. The Jonas Saalbach collaboration Long Sunny Dazze follows, the hazy synth chords add an understated touch of mystery and euphoria. Majestic vocal turns from Philosophia and Sleeping Genie then breeze in to breathe in evolving emotion to the mix. Bold strings continue to cut through on Good Morning Sunshine with Thankyou City, before the mix drives us towards the epic chants of Uone & Jamie Stevens’ rework of Jam & Spoon’s Odyssey to Anyoona, one of the jewels in the crown of this mix. A wonderful remix of Monolink’s Sirens completes the journey, with its mesmerising indie-dance energy a fitting closer.

With such a lofty bar set by his Balance predecessors, Uone’s challenge of delivering something memorable required a deep creative undertaking and his trademark alchemical touch in the studio. He’s delivered in spades with a deeply personal mix packed with exclusive cuts that transports your mind to another plane entirely.
