There’s a first time for everything. Recently, Janus Rasmussen, one half of the acclaimed music duo KIASMOS, decided to go on his own with his first solo album, Vín. Now, only three months later, the electronic music producer from the Faroe Islands is releasing two remix EPs with tracks from Vín reinterpreted by six electronic music artists.

The material is divided into two EPs, the first containing remixes of three tracks by collaborators Delhia de France, Aparde, Joseph Ashworth and Aleksandir, and the second containing remixes of Rasmussen’s track ‘14’ by collaborators Ryan Davis, and Olaf Stuut. “What I love about these artists is that they are all very expressive. They all make very deep and emotional music themselves, so it’s a perfect fit for them to remix my music with all its weirdness and nuances,” says Rasmussen.

Although Rasmussen didn’t know the collaborators personally, he had been following all six of them closely. Berlin-based producer Aparde is part of Christian Löffler’s Ki Records, the label which has also released Rasmussen’s solo debut, Vín. “You can really hear that he’s drummer, his rhythms are always so interesting and endearing,” says Rasmussen of Aparde, “His sound design is huge as well.” Janus already collaborated with Delhia de France, German singer, songwriter, producer and visual artist on her previous track: „I was really pleasantly surprised by the great production and the enchanting vocal performances. This type of music is just up my alley. Moody and dark sounds are deep in my Nordic DNA.“ Ryan Davis has become a household name in clubs worldwide with his melodic techno, and Rasmussen had been playing Davis’ tunes in his live sets for a long time, “He’s super intricate with his remixes and you can really hear how much work and soul he put into these pieces,” says Rasmussen.

The resulting EPs see Rasmussen’s tracks be taken into all sorts of directions, some more down-tempo and others thumping, some amplify elements of Rasmussen’s original track to extremes while others have the original melody running nearly imper-ceptible at the background. “It’s such a huge honour getting artists that you really respect to remix your material, it’s so fascinating to hear in which way they take the music,” says Rasmussen, “Sometimes it’s a completely new song and sometimes it’s just expanded or made better.” Despite these differences, all five collaborations are an astounding testament that Rasmussen’s inaugu-ration in the world of remixes definitely flowed, “It was a surprisingly easy process. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Janus Rasmussen (Kiasmos)- Lilla

Janus Rasmussen, one half of the critically acclaimed minimal techno duo KIASMOS releases his second pre-album single ‘Lilla’ on the 8th of March, ‘Lilla’ is taken from his upcoming debut solo album Vín which is set for release on the 29th of March via Christian Löffler’s Ki Records.

Leading up to the release of Vìn, Janus Rasmussen released the pre-album single, ‘Green Wine’ along with its accompanying shadow puppet music video on the 8th of February via one of the biggest culture and music sites in Brazil, Omelete.

Janus Rasmussen is not only part of Kiasmos, but also forms part of the electro-pop quartet Bloodgroup who has since become one of Iceland’s hottest musical exports.

Josin – Company (Kiasmos Remix)

Josin – the project from German composer and producer Arabella Rauch – has premiered a new remix of ‘Company’ from Kiasmos, the electronic duo made up of BAFTA-winning Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds, and the Faroe Islands’ Janus Rasmussen, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup.

Kiasmos’ take on ‘Company’ maintains the raw beauty of the original vocal and combines it perfectly with a distinctly Kiasmos style, creating affecting and emotional soundscapes from a minimal electronic approach. “It feels a bit unreal to be honest to have a Kiasmos remix of one of my songs” explains Josin. “I love their work and their approach to electronical music. While waiting to hear a first mix I was excited about how the two worlds would sound combined: From the first notes I heard, it made complete sense. Very Kiasmos, very Josin. They used the right essentials from the original and added their deepness and emotional colour in an amazing way. The way they kept the vocal part completely unfiltered and raw is exactly how I see the vocals in that track. For me, the remix raises the song to a new level and inspires me back for my own work.”

The original track was written last summer during a campervan trip in Norway on a ridiculously small, battery-powered keyboard. “It was fun because I was able to work on the melodies basically everywhere: On a kayak in the middle of the ocean, while hiking, while waiting for ferries” explains Josin. “Sometimes writing on the go and with less gear makes one focus on the essentials more. Company is about trying to become one with something but not succeeding. It´s a solitary, careful declaration of love.”

Last year Josin released her debut acclaimed EP ‘Epilogue’ via Swedish independent label Dumont Dumont (Ry X, José González). The EP sees a dynamic blend of electronic jolts, enhanced by keyboards and haunting poetic vocals that draw on a variety of traditions, from classical to electronic. As a self-taught producer, Josin is always experimenting, incorporating the electronical world into her writing as well as composing string arrangements.

Josin will be performing at this year’s Great Escape Festival in Brighton on May 18th at 8.30pm at the Unitarian Church.

Late Night Tales: Ólafur Arnalds

Standing at the intersection where techno meets classical music, Ólafur Arnalds directs the newest Late Night Tales, set for release on 24th June 2016.

After releasing the breakthrough album ‘And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness’, in 2014 he was awarded a BAFTA for best original music for the TV series Broadchurch. Arnalds’ music has a quietude that seems perfectly apposite and that’s evident here as each song drifts like an autumn wind towards the next.

Arnalds has enlisted the help of a few of his countrymen for the journey out west – electronic bands Samaris and Hjaltalín – and just as his records manage to combine the experimentalism and adventure of electronic music with a classical sensibility, here he weaves them perfectly, using tracks like Koreless’ brilliant post-dubstep ‘Last Remnants’ alongside the enigmatic brilliance of Jai Paul. It’s a perfect musical landscape that is eerie yet beautiful, as on Odesza’s ‘How Did I Get Here’.

As if Ólafur wasn’t spoiling us enough, he offers up three exclusives: his own ‘Kinesthesia I’ and ‘RGB’ and ‘Orgoned’ by his techno side project Kiasmos. Alongside that we have the obligatory cover version (Destiny’s Child’s ‘Say My Name’) and also a Late Night Tales debut for David Tennant, reading a story by Anam Sufi, with whom Ólafur worked on Broadchurch.

“When I was asked to do the next installation of the Late Night Tales series I thought “This will be fun and easy, only a couple of days work. No problem!”. Six months later, I was still pulling my hair out in some kind of quest to make the perfect mix. As someone who has never really done mixes before, I learned a lot of things along the way and the whole experience was very inspiring. I decided to approach the mix in a similar way as I would one of my scores. This is the soundtrack of my life.
