Ellen Allien – Nost Remixes 2

Following the triumphant release of Ellen Allien’s seventh studio album ‘Nost’, BPitch Control proudly unveil the second wave of remixes from the LP. Bringing together four more underground heroes to reinterpret Ellen’s original works, this new batch of music is diverse and brings a whole new dimension to the album project.

This time around Truncate, Gerd Janson, FaltyDL and Kyoka are the cohorts who have been brought in to inject their style into three tracks from ‘Nost’.

Truncate is renowned for his remix work, hired by some of the most respected labels in the business to put his own deadly twist on a variety of productions. The LA-based powerhouse is also adept at creating his own solo cuts, carving out a sterling rep across the industry for his deep take on techno.

Gerd Janson is the man who always seems to have a smile on his face, his enjoyment of music is reflected in his killer DJ sets and stellar releases. Asowner of Running BackRecords he is also responsible for A&Ring impeccable music – a man of exquisite tastes he is a welcome addition to the ‘Nost’ remix team.

FaltyDL comes at music with a soulful intent, bringing sultry vibes and authentic eclecticism to his work. There’s emotion, mystery and inventiveness with each new creation from this accomplished Ninja Tune affiliate.

Last up, Kyoka the Japanese experimental producer whose spine-tingling compositions suck you into their sparse vortex and keep you locked in. Her innate talent makes her one of the most exciting artists in her field and it’s a pleasure to have her on board.

The remixes part II kicks off with Truncate’s version of ‘Innocence’, a stripped back, fidgeting interpretation that operates at a high BPM with plenty of low end.
Truncate lets the beats roll out, gradually adding new elements to enhance the potency of the percussion, meanwhile the original vocal floats in and out of the background adding an air of mystery.
Next up is Gerd Janson’s take on ‘Call Me’, summoning breaks and dirty synth stabs from the early nineties it’s a rambunctious affair which completely deconstructs the original. This is one conjures up images of a sweat-fuelled warehouse rave with strobes lighting up a packed dancefloor.
Gerd’s all-out rave remix is counterposed with FaltyDL’s contemplative reconstruction of ‘Erdmond’ which works from a two-step beat, with a deep meditative atmosphere. The overall feel is that of early dubstep, the kind of measured,sub bass powered music that was prevalent in the UK circa 2005.
Lastly, Kyoka demonstrates her prowess with a luscious, twisted incarnation of ‘Call Me’. The vocals are warped and indecipherable, the bass is menacing and the beats woozy and lethargic.

A special end to a very special EP that showcases the breadth of techno and its influences, while paying homage to Ellen’s stunning album.

Klyne – Break Away (Falty DL Remix)

Following the release of their highly acclaimed, eponymously-titled debut album on 30th June, singer Nick Klein and producer Ferdous Dehzad – together known as Klyne – continue to assault an expectant blogoshpere and national radio alight with their sophisticated, future-proof electronic pop – with the ‘Klyne’ LP already racing to over 15M combined streams on Spotify.

With Klyne picking up heavyweight support across some of the most important platforms in music including i-D, PIGEONS & PLANES, THE FADER and NOISEY as well as receiving airplay support from BBC R1, 1Xtra, 6 Music and Beats1, Klyne’s debut album has undoubtedly been one of the most critically lauded of the year.

With recent remixes coming from some of the hottest producers in the industry right now in LXURY and Mall Grab, the duo add to a suprlative package by enlisting heavyweight don Falty DL for a dreamily futuristic, choir-infused rework – adding a new layer of sophistication to an already superlative original.

Klyne continue to associate with a select and absolutely spot-on of producers – Falty DL just serves to add to the hype Klyne are already receiving in swathes.

Tricky – Mixed By… Vol.1

Tricky has today released an EP of remixes encompassing the first two singles from his forthcoming album, ununiform. Standout tracks ‘The Only Way’ and ‘When We Die (feat. Martina Topley-Bird)’ receive reworks from Kahn, FaltyDL and The Heatwave respectively. Available everywhere digitally, the remixes can be heard below.

The producers have also taken the time to share their own thoughts on Tricky’s lasting influence upon their own material and more widely on the last two decades of British music.

FaltyDL is first out the blocks with a catchy as hell remix of ‘When We Die (feat. Martina Topley-Bird)’ – the recent single which so excited long-standing Tricky & Martina fans upon its release last month.

He commented:

“I used to work in a restaurant cleaning dishes many years ago. They had an old fashioned jukebox but it was filled with CD’s. A copy of Maxinquaye was in the machine and I would sneak out of the kitchen and load it up then dive back into my work. I must have worn that CD out, it was a daily thing for a while. I grew some attachment to the music and have been listening to Tricky ever since. There’s a certain combination between the tone of his voice and the production that always hit a nerve pretty deeply with me, it’s amazing.”

As CRACK magazine wrote in premiering Kahn’s sultry edit of ‘The Only Way’:

“Tricky stan and Bandulu Records label head Kahn has gained a reputation for cutting experimental grime dubs that are shot with a dose of the same dark, negative space that artists like Tricky helped to innovate. For this spacious remix, the Bristol producer has reworked Tricky’s trademark whispered vocals to drift into the haze of rumbling drums..”

Kahn himself adds:

“It’s hard to know where to begin in expressing how much of an influence Tricky’s music has been on me, not just as a musician but in my life generally. It’s music that’s been with me since I was a child; listening to his albums over and over again at school on my CD walkman, memorising lyrics and immersing myself in the unique atmosphere of his work and collaborations. It was an essential pillar of my musical education growing up in Bristol and remains some of the most important music and poetry to me personally. Certain songs of his are so entwined to specific memories and periods in my life, it’s like the music’s just a part of my identity.

So with that said, naturally I was honored to be asked to remix some of Tricky’s new work. In truth it was initially a bit daunting working with someone who’s been such a crucial creative influence, but the whole experience has meant a great deal to me and I hope we can work together again at some point in the future.”

Finally – rising bashment producers The Heatwave were tasked by Tricky (ever with his ear to the ground) to work their magic on ‘When We Die’ just in time for the last summer rays.

“It’s a big deal for me getting the chance to remix a Tricky tune. His music had a big impact on me as a teenager and he’s a brilliant example of a groundbreaking, genre-defying, Jamaican-influenced British MC. Before grime, garage and almost even UK hip hop, you had Massive Attack and Tricky weaving words, booming out basslines and melting minds and moods. Their Wild Bunch crew was an inspiration for what The Heatwave has become as a UK soundsystem.”

Video: FaltyDL – Drugs feat. Rosie Lowe

Earlier this summer FaltyDL – Brooklyn-based producer/electronic artist Drew Lustman – shared his new single “Drugs,” featuring the soulful tones of UK singer/songwriter Rosie Lowe.

“The song is very personal to me for a few reasons. Drugs have been a character in my life for as long as I can remember, both good and bad. This collaboration is like an exorcism, aided by the lovely voice of Rosie Lowe. It is also a key anchor on my new album which I spent a long time creating, pouring my entire self into for two years.” – FaltyDL

“What I liked about ‘Drugs’ is it had various connotations, and I wanted to retain that level of mystery in this film. An ambiguity surrounding various unrelated characters that could somehow fall under the same theme. The viewer is left to decide the purpose and consequences of what they are watching Vices, secrets, guilty pleasures. I wanted it to be unsettling but also slightly weird and sometimes laughable. We shot with a dark, voyeuristic aesthetic to it, always trying to ground each shot with foreground context to position the viewer in the scenarios as the watcher.”

“This album took 2 years to make, more time then I have ever spent on anything in my life.

I’ve always tried to make music for clubs and outward facing experiences, but often in spite of my best efforts I end up supplying a sound that translates best on a private personal level. FaltyDL – Rich Prick Poor Dick

After the boundary breaking, experimental excursions of recent LP In The Wild, Brooklyn-based FaltyDL was hungry to return to the dancefloor music that made his name. That hunger shines though on his Rich Prick Poor Dick single – a sleek, stripped back duo of dancefloor stalkers.

The title track is propulsive, urgent techno with a nagging, trance-inflected melody, the song gradually building to epic intensity, its groove belying its 147 BPMs and its energy barely contained. Flipside Bookaloo eases back on the throttle, combining organic percussion with deep sub-bass and machine-music melodies to irresistible effect.

Rich Prick Poor Dick marks the welcome return of one of the dance music’s most inventive talents, with a pair of all-thrills, no-frills, 21st century club tracks.

Rosie Lowe – Who’s That Girl (FaltyDL Remix)

Brooklyn producer/DJ and Ninja Tune signee FaltyDL has unveiled a bass-heavy club edit of Rosie Lowe’s new single ‘Who’s That Girl?’ FaltyDL’s remix is the first in a series of three to be released on April 5th. To coincide with the release, Rosie will play an intimate headline show at London’s St. Pancras Old Church on April 15th.

“Who’s That Girl?” is the latest single to be taken from Rosie Lowe’s upcoming debut album coming this Summer on Wolf Tone. The single follows previous singles ‘Water Came Down’ and ‘How’d You Like It’ as the third taste of what’s in store. Taking the track to the New York underground with a dark, haunting club flip is Ninja Tune producer/DJ FaltyDL. The mix features Rosie’s ethereal vocal skewed into ghostly whispers over a thudding club beat swamped in sub bass.

Says Rosie of the single, “‘Who’s That Girl?’ is about not recognising someone any more. It’s always in the times of struggle – when something bad happens – that the biggest lessons are learnt and you realise who your true friends are. Some people step up and some people step down. ‘Who’s That Girl?’ is about a friend that stepped down when I needed her most. It was a blessing in disguise as it opened my eyes to all the things I couldn’t see from such close proximity.”

After being heralded as one to watch by numerous outlets last year including the influential Dazed & Confused, Rosie Lowe is shifting gear in 2015. Following support slots with Neneh Cherry on her January UK tour, Rosie will perform an intimate date at St. Pancras Old Church in April before unveiling full tour plans for later this year.
