Video: Dusky feat. Solomon Grey – Long Wait

Premiered via Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show as Hottest Record, “Long Wait” is the latest single to be taken from Dusky’s anticipated forthcoming album Outer. Today, Dusky present the trippy official music video – all shot in one take underwater. Watch the official video for “Long Wait” below and stream the track on Spotify HERE. Outer is set for release on October 14th via Astralwerks/17 Steps and is available for preorder HERE.

“Directing a one-take video underwater was great fun,” explained director Noel Paul. We synchronized the action sonically, by banging a rock against the side of the pool underwater. Meanwhile our actor Marcos was able to hold his breath for the entire 3 minutes over and over again while his body cooled down to a scarily low temperature. There’s no trickery, he really held his breath!”

Embodying the melting pot of influences that Outer represents, “Long Wait” brings together cinematic strings, rave bleeps, chugging grooves and the haunting vocals of Joe Wilson from Solomon Grey in Dusky’s unique style. It follows the wavey, industrial techno surge of “Sort It Out Sharon” featuring godfather of grime Wiley, and the anthemic, 90s-nodding electronica workout “Ingrid Is A Hybrid.”

A journey through the respected duo’s many tastes and influences, the 11 tracks on Outer touch on everything from Belgian techno, UK rave and prog house to ambient, new beat and electronica, offering curveball collaborations with the legendary Gary Numan and the aforementioned Wiley along the way.

From the Orbital-referencing synth-and-strings crescendos of intro “All We Ever Needed” to the UK house meets hardcore-era Prodigy of “Runny Nose,” the duo’s unique capacity for inventive sampling and cleverly reshaping their halcyon influences remains as dominant as it did on their breakthrough underground club singles.

Alongside the album’s release, Nick and Alfie will be taking their new audio-visual live show on tour across the UK, with full headline European and North American DJ tours announced alongside. An Australia/New Zealand tour will follow in the coming months. Current dates below. Ticket links here: duskymusic.com/live.

Solomon Grey – Solomon Grey LP

solomon grey

As they announce their debut album, Solomon Grey here reveals the first single from their forthcoming release, ‘Sweet 84’. Available now, ‘Sweet 84’ is a marker of what fans can expect from the self-titled record, a dark, brooding and cinematic track, with a chorus that’s catchy as hell.

The release then of Solomon Grey’s self-titled debut album on March 18th marks a milestone on a fifteen-year journey which has taken the band from the UK, to Ireland, Australia and now back home to London. Released by Decca Records the album is a collection of alternative electronic pop songs that serve as the soundtrack to a journey of persistence and determination by musicians and composers Tom Kingston and Joe Wilson.

Solomon Grey’s Wilson and Kingston initially met playing in covers bands in Oxford before relocating to London. After a few years of writing together, it was only after writing ‘Last Century Man’ that they felt they had a sound they could call their own. However, finding it hard to dedicate time to the project and with Tom now battling a severe illness the pair decided to pack up and relocate to a remote corner of County Cork, Ireland.

Living beside the Atlantic Ocean, they began many of the songs that form the basis of this debut LP, including ‘Gascarene Sound’ and ‘Choir To The Wild.’ It sounds idyllic but the isolation was deafening and with Tom’s illness worsening, their stay was cut short.

Shortly afterwards a family bereavement uprooted Tom permanently to the Australian outback. Determined to continue the project they had started, Joe joined him in the rural isolation of New South Wales. As Tom slowly recovered his health, new songs such as ‘Electric Baby’, ‘Epitaph’  and first single from the record ‘Sweet 84’  took on new meanings reflecting on the lives they had left behind. Production on the tracks was refined from listening back to mixes whilst driving along the long straight roads at night.

At the tail end of 2012 Solomon Grey returned to London to show the world their music. With a fantastic initial reaction it wasn’t long before the TV and Film world took notice and commissioned the band to write for a variety of projects including BBC/HBO’s The Casual Vacancy – with the music released as part of a collection of their work to date on their  ‘Selected Works’ compilation.

The duo continued to write, adding ‘See You There’, ‘Broken Light’ and ‘The Rift’ to complete the record. It is an emotive, somatic and diverse body of work that encapsulates the journey and transformation undertaken by Tom Kingston and Joe Wilson. With the metamorphosis now complete the eponymous LP marks the first chapter in the story of Solomon Grey.

Solomon Grey have just premiered the stunning live video for the absolutely beautiful track ‘Miradors’, check it out here:

The video sees Solomon Grey – aka Joe Wilson and Tom Kingston – accompanied by string instrumentalists with painted faces and offer up an haunting slice of electronic beauty. It’s an incredibly shot video that manages to capture just how mesmerising the band are live as well as providing you with a stirring moment to take out of the day-to-day rat-race!

The pair are truly unique in today’s music landscape; they are just as at-home creating M83-esque EPIC tracks and soundscapes as they are making hip-hop beats, incredible sonic film scores and soundtracking TV adverts. Nothing is out of bounds for their music making process; they’ll capture field recordings and the sounds of cars and turn it into something really poignant and beautiful.

Solomon Grey – Invisible feat. Mahaut Mondino

SG15 Press Shot_Medium

British electronic duo Solomon Grey announce new EP ‘Selected Features’, released via Decca on September 11th.

Understanding London-based duo Joe Wilson and Tom Kingston, aka Solomon Grey, requires ditching the traditional definition of a band. These two can’t be defined by a genre or category; and ‘Selected Features’ is further testament to the artists’ versatile talent as writers, producers & composers.

Each track on the EP involves a collaboration that was initially recorded for their score of BBC / HBO’s The Casual Vacancy but which weren’t released on the ‘Selected Works’ soundtrack in February. Tracks ‘Invisible’ and ‘The West’ in particular are included for release on the EP following popular demand from the viewing public.

The EP includes a brand new, sprawling and dramatic “night mix” of the gorgeous ‘Twilight’, now streaming here. With its cinematic shimmer and deep, swirling atmosphere, this new mix stemmed from an arrangement Solomon Grey created for a live performance at The West Reservoir in April this year. Family friend Imogen Rose features on the track, with Solomon Grey telling how they “were blown away by the beauty and innocence in her vocal and instantly wanted to work with her.”

‘The West’, meanwhile, features Essa; one of the key figures of UK hip-hop’s golden era. Essa’s smooth lyrical flow merges with Solomon Grey’s hip-hop beats and trip-hop soundscapes to, transport the listener through to another side of the band’s varied musical influences.

Elsewhere on the EP is a stunning duet version with Eliza Shaddad of the critically acclaimed ‘Miradors’ and new stand out track ‘Invisible’ that features soulful pop vocals courtesy of Mahaut Mondino. Duet partner Eliza Shaddad is perhaps best known as a vocalist and writer with chart-dominating and Grammy Award winning electronic outfit Clean Bandit. Mondino, meanwhile, has caught the ears and attention of the likes of Noisey and The Fader, who call her “France’s answer to FKA Twigs.”

To celebrate the release of the ‘Selected Features’ EP, Solomon Grey will play a live headline show at The Waiting Rooms on September 15th. Tickets are available here: https://tickets.songkick.com/events/24607379. The EP also has several accompanying remixes including the John Monkman remix of Twilight, which has already picked up Radio 1 support from Skream, Eton Messy & Jonas Rathsman. With a new soundtrack in the pipeline, plans to tour the band and the debut LP set for release early 2016 it’s safe to say Solomon Grey are busy becoming one of the UK’s most vital artists.

‘Selected Features’ tracklisting:
1. ‘Twilight (Night Mix) feat. Imogen Rose’
2. ‘The West feat. Essa’
3. ‘Miradors (Duet Version) feat. Eliza Shaddad’
4. ‘Invisible feat. Mahaut Mondino’

Lead track ‘Miradors’ is driven by domineering synths and a forceful beat, balanced by soothing falsetto vocals, punctuated by glimmers of staccato strings. ‘Choir To The Wild’ embodies apocalyptic serenity; an expansive track with a euphoric build that is almost hypnotic in its power. Listen here.
