Using the platform of fabric and FABRICLIVE that the London club have lovingly nurtured over the past 20 years, fabric Records present the past and future with 20 artists across 20 tracks, for the 20th Anniversary celebration of the beating heart of EC1.

1999: the beginning of the story. 1,000 weekends and 3,000 events, together with a seminal CD series that wrapped up last year with closing instalments from fabric residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis with club founder Keith Reilly, alongside London underground innovators Burial & Kode9 for FABRICLIVE. This special 20th Anniversary release reflects the history of the club from the very beginning to the current crop of residents. Here you’ll find artists who helped shape the sound of the club, grew up in the club, have been inspired by the club and have become part of the fabric family.

FABRICLIVE represents the finest in dubstep, drum & bass, jungle, breaks and experimental beats. Houndstooth’s Special Request leads the charge in trademark style, opening the floor to Friday night luminaries Source Direct and J Majik. Shackleton and Pinch & Trim started playing the club during the birth of the UK dubstep scene and give a taste of the hugely disparate evolution of bass music. Daniel Avery and B.Traits show off their dancefloor versatility, while Rupture co-founder Mantra plants a flag for London’s vibrant musical future. Closing are two of the club’s longest associates Groove Armada and original FABRICLIVE resident James Lavelle as UNKLE.

fabric has been responsible for nurturing the underground London house and techno scene, inspiring and revolutionising the clubbing landscape by confidently proving that you don’t have to book commercial acts to be a success. The breadth of talent here displays the far reaching arms of the night – with an opening spread of melodic techno from Nina Kraviz, the shuddering electro of Steffi, and evolving experimental house of Margaret Dygas. New resident IMOGEN veers things in a darker direction towards Cassy’s pumping house and Marcel Dettmann’s classic late-night techno. Anastasia Kristensen drives ahead while Houndstooth’s Call Super takes things down a deeper notch with a track reminiscent of many a classic night in room 3, and Maya Jane Coles steps up with a playful slice of house. British dance music pioneer Sasha closes out on a euphoric high with layers of building vocal and melody.

Throwing Snow – Rheged

Featured in the recently announced and hotly anticipated ‘fabric presents Bonobo’ mix, Houndstooth are pleased to present a new single from Throwing Snow, ‘Rheged’.

Taking its name from the dark age kingdom in the Old North of England, ‘Rheged’ is a menacing affair. The characteristic blend of rich encompassing bass and beguiling synth melody, synonymous with the Throwing Snow sound, are present once again but with a new fiercer twist, as distorted 808 hits evolve threateningly underneath warped percussive melodic lines and hats which shift and merge over top. The track is a careful mix of hard hitting motifs and lighter elements, which side by side, perfectly convey the beauty and mystery of the ancient landscape which sits so close to the producer’s heart.

The man behind the Throwing Snow moniker, Ross Tones, first worked alongside Bonobo supporting him on the European leg of ‘The Northern Borders tour’ in 2013. Since then they’ve shared various lineups across the globe and Ross will once again be joining Bonobo for his DJ set to launch fabric Presents on February 24th at fabric – something he’s greatly looking forward to.

Fresh off the back of their hundredth mix CD, which concluded the longstanding format of one of the most important mix chronicles in electronic music, fabric records reset the clock with the inaugural chapter of their new series: fabric presents. Rising to the occasion is none other than seminal British producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Bonobo.

‘fabric presents’ reimagines the iconic mix series into a quarterly subscription, expanding on the roster of artists involved and upgrading the contents of the package. For the first time, listeners will be provided with full length individual tracks from each mix. The CD and Vinyl packages will also feature accompanying digital files of the music, without losing the beloved physical ownership of the original format – no more trawling the web for downloads, then!

The artists invited to participate in this series will reflect the full calendar of nights at fabric, including the more recent ‘Forms’ events, new midweek programming and festival tie-ins; not forgetting the iconic FABRICLIVE and Saturday night parties. This permits a broader musical spectrum, representing the diversity of programming that sustains fabric’s reputation as a leading source of world class bookings.

A fitting testament to this broadened musical horizon, Bonobo is an artist who transcends genre – initially exploring elements of instrumental hip-hop, electronica and ambient with live instrumentation before going on to enjoy an illustrious career with a sea of collaborators ranging from Erykah Badu and Andreya Triana to Rhye and Nick Murphy. His highly textural aesthetic translates seamlessly from an orchestrated live show to sought-after DJ gigs, which lend to his status as a tastemaker and afford him a loyal following around the world.

Bonobo’s track choices for the first ‘fabric presents’ mix reflect his penchant for expansive textures and intricate structures. Employing the multi-instrumental arrangements of his own work he builds a clear narrative across 74 minutes of house, techno, electronica and breakbeat. Each track exudes character, allowing animated melodies to wander and develop, all the while grounded by an acute sense of harmonic progression and rhythmic precision. Unheard material from Bonobo and his Barakas alias, as well as exclusives from Poté and Houndstooth mainstay Throwing Snow sit alongside a glistening 2004 house gem from Âme, euphoric breakbeat from Will Saul and a peak time remix from Laurent Garnier to name a few, all topped off by an entrancing 90s ambient classic from John Beltran.

‘fabric presents’ expands on the winning formula of its predecessor, introducing a more open musical palette without losing sight of its past. As the first entry to this new chapter, Bonobo’s mix fuses disparate sonic wanderings into one vivid storyboard, merging different timelines into a seamless narrative and ushering in an exciting new era for the label, nightclub and mix series.

fabric 99: Sasha

Online rumours among the faithful have been growing for months, building to a fever point of anticipation. Now it can be revealed at last, these two outstanding names of the electronic music scene are to finally combine forces with Sasha’s fabric 99 mix. The producer, DJ, live artist and label head has had a long and close relationship with the iconic club, and his mix compilation, including two unreleased Sasha cuts, marks the penultimate issue of the fabric hundred.

‘Getting the chance to do this fabric CD was an honour’ Sasha says. ‘Some of my fondest moments playing in London have been at that club. I really wanted to capture what I do there as I feel it’s somewhere I play differently to anywhere else in the world.’

‘Playing differently’ is Sasha’s trademark approach to his craft. He always seeks new challenges and worlds to conquer, from his seminal ‘Scene Delete’ album to his darkly melodic DJ sets,alone or with John Digweed, at worldwide gigs and residencies, to his recent triumphant, swiftly sold-out ‘REFRACTED:LIVE’ shows at prestigious music venues in major UK cities.

With his customary inimitable mixing, Sasha transforms 20 tracks into a seamlessly crafted whole. His transitions are legendary among devotees, who will find what they’re looking for in fabric 99. Broken beats and ambient note progressions combine with melodic techno and uplifting house, stealthily building an expansive soundscape that blends futurism and nostalgia. Disparate aesthetics and varying percussive structures grow together into a cohesive and haunting experience. Ranging from timeless tracks by Carl Craig, Exercise One & Mathew Jonson to recent gems from Objekt, Kora, Jus-ed and DJ Hell, and two unreleased works from Sasha himself, one a rework of BAILE.

The mix was recorded in fabric’s Room 1 booth, using a combination of hardware and software from Eventide, Model 1, Allen & Heath and MOOG, as well as a variety of other equipment incorporated into the overall production of the release.

The closure of fabric has seen a reaction that has been completely humbling and overwhelming to all of us on the team, from over 150,000 signing a petition of support to raising in excess of £300,000 in donations to help our legal fight. Support has come from every corner of the industry, with fundraising events at a number of different venues being held up and down the UK. This response perfectly encapsulates everything the electronic music community represents.

Both fabric Records and our artist led label Houndstooth decided a release that embodies this spirit would be a further powerful way to demonstrate the collective power of our community. We asked artists associated with both labels to donate a track to the cause, needing to act fast we gave a deadline of just 3 weeks in total, from inception to final master. The brief was simple, we asked for a previously unreleased track, either brand new or an alternative version of an old classic.

The response has been far greater than we could have ever anticipated, with an array of amazing artists delivering stunning tracks. Given this generosity every track that has been submitted is featured on the release, meaning an incredible 111 tracks make up the final running order, presented in alphabetical order.

Due to touring and time constraints many more artists could and would have like to have been involved, and we can’t give enough thanks to all the labels that have generously allowed their artists to contribute.

In the era of the playlist, this compilation represents a comprehensive overview of electronic music from the outer fringes of experimental explorations right through to music aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

Ahead of the court date which will determine the long term future of fabric nightclub we’d like to present this compilation as a document of this moment in time but also as the perfect embodiment of everything fabric is and stands for.

FABRICLIVE 86: My Nu Leng

With high profile releases on Black Butter and MTA Records to their name, Bristol-based duo and bass music trendsetters My Nu Leng are on the ride of their life. Huge remixes for Naughty Boy’s UK No.1 ‘La La La’, Rudimental’s ‘Right Here’ and Clean Bandit’s ‘Mozart’s House’ have led the duo around the world, showcasing their inimitable hybrid sound to their ever increasing fan base.

Impossible to pigeonhole, Tommy and Jammo, aka My Nu Leng, have stunned critics and fans alike with their diverse and rich output ever since bursting onto the scene. Conscious of their roots in UK bass culture, their re-imagined sound has taken the underground community by storm, as have their energetic and deliberately dark sets. With a sound that offers an insight into grime, dubstep, drum & bass and garage, it is clear that My Nu Leng are firmly rooted in the rich musical heritage of their adopted hometown. The duo’s forward-thinking smash record ‘Masterplan,’ was released on trendsetting label Black Butter in 2014 and served as their breakthrough, taking the airwaves by storm and launching the duo into the public consciousness. FABRICLIVE 86 serves as homage to the influences that have made My Nu Leng what they are today. With an eclectic mix of underground anthems meshed with new and unreleased material, the album takes the listener through the fascinating and complex workflow of the young duo.

Opening with an unreleased collaboration with Kahn, the dark and moody atmosphere of the mix is immediately set, as is the consistent undercurrent of UK bass. Oriental-tinged instrumentation combines with a throbbing middle section before bridging into Klient’s ‘Shelter’ and exploding into the unabashedly anthemic ‘Scylla’ from RL Grime. Transitioning smoothly yet with an urgency attributable to the duo’s reputation for high octane set building, FABRICLIVE 86 takes all the twists and turns that have made the duo their name. Hypnotic vocal samples ring throughout the track selection before the duo introduce their earth shaking collaboration with Flava D – ‘Soul Shake.’ Its frenetic wobbling bass and deep resolve dominating in its clear designation as a floor shaker. The mix then moves into a percussion-focused section with the MTA-released ‘Horizons,’ Negativ’s unreleased ‘Stealth’ and Harry Judda’s ‘Machines’ taking the reigns.

Just as the duo takes a break with a special ambient version of ‘Pushed’, a steady 4/4 beat takes over in the form of Myd’s ‘Numero Uno’, before Clientele and Nu-Birth respectively offer upfront and classic tastes of UK garage. Faze Miyake’s ‘Ice Cold’ is ingeniously coupled with the classic jungle snare rolls of Mella Dee’s ‘Keep On’, whilst Randomer’s classic ‘Bring’ adds a splash of underground techno. A VIP version of ‘Set It’, My Nu Leng’s collaboration with FineArt, along with unreleased contributions from Jus Now, T. Williams, Notion, SNØW and Dismantle, ensure that fresh sounds dominate the final stretch of the mix. By the time Indigo’s remix of Synth Sense’s ‘Tomorrow’s World’ registers and settles into its apt heartbeat-like ambience, the listener is at last given time to reflect in what is a fitting and well-adjusted outro.

Eats Everything – fabric 86

Eats Everything has come a long way since he first got his hands on a set of decks aged just 12, living in a small rural town just outside Bristol. Following his older brother’s example, the young Eats would get the bus to town with his friends to buy records and play them back at parties in his garage. As he got older, he started going to raves and his tastes evolved into house and techno. He would go to Lakota in Bristol with his friends every Friday and Saturday night, looking up to the likes of Carl Cox, Colin Dale, Jackmaster Funk and Jon Da Silva. It was here that his passion for music and DJ’ing got serious.

After winning a DJ competition ran by DJ Easygroove, Eats became a full time resident DJ around various Bristol clubs. However, it wasn’t until after a break with a regular job that he started taking production seriously. He got his big break with 2011’s ‘Entrance Song’, released on Catz N Dogz’ Pets Recordings. His touring career took off, and several releases on the likes of Hot Creations, Dirtybird, Crosstown Rebels and Method followed. However, 2015 proved to be one of Eats Everything’s biggest years yet, with the release of his debut mix album ‘Fries With That?’ and the launch of his own label and events series Edible. Eats Everything’s hard work throughout the year was rewarded when he won the hotly-contended title of ‘Best British DJ’ at the DJ Mag Best of British Awards 2015.

Now, to kick off 2016, Eats Everything is stepping up to join the fabric compilation series, which has a reputation for hosting mixes from seminal artists like John Digweed, Andrew Weatherall, Tony Humphries, Adam Beyer, Ricardo Villalobos, Marco Carola and many more. Since its conception in 2001, the fabric mix series has risen to become one of the most respected in Europe; the release of one of these compilations can prove to be a pivotal moment in an artist’s career. It’s a notable highlight for Eats, who first took on the famous fabric decks in 2011 and has been returning ever since.

The result is a musical treat for lovers of all shades of house, from the classic to the modern. One thing that unites the records in the mix, as Eats explains, is that they all “have had some kind of meaning to me and I have played every one of them at fabric… some are old, some are new, some are bangers, some are groovers, some are trippy, some are euphoric, but they are all ‘fabric records’ and that’s what this mix is all about – condensing what I would do in Room 1/2/3 over four hours or so, into a 75 minute mix.”

Included in the mix are two special new tracks – Lauren Lane’s playful ‘The Diary of a Madwoman’, which is due for release on Eats Everything’s own imprint, Edible, at the end of January 2016, and ‘Baby Talk’, a production that Cajmere created especially for this mix.

Eats kicks off fabric 86 with a classic Danny Tenaglia edit of The Ananda Project’s ‘Cascades of Colour’, whose echoing, hypnotic vocals prove an attention-grabbing, nostalgia-tinged start to the 75 minutes.
Expertly building pace, the mix takes in laidback deep house groover ‘Kaimanawa’ by Cavalier and the darker ‘Nostalgia’ by Peter Horrevorts before the distinctive flute melody of Lauren Lane’s ‘Diary of a Madwoman’ is teased in.
A ravey, uplifting section of chords, cowbells and vocals keeps the pace up, before the minimal, stuttering percussion and subtle buss-saw synths of the Jeff Bennett remix of Tim J’s ‘Motion’ takes us down a notch into deeper, minimalistic territory.
Classic highlights over the second half of the mix also include Booka Shade’s dark, stomping ‘Trespass 06’, and Golden Boy and Miss Kittin’s career-making 2001 hit ‘Rippin Kittin’.

Eats chooses to sign off with the 1996 classic, ‘Galaxia’ by Moonman. It’s a track with real personal significance for him – “It was the last track on both a Friday and Saturday night at Lakota in Bristol, so it felt fitting to finish one of the most important milestones of my career with something that has been very important in the build-up of this becoming my career.” With its emotion-laden synths and uplifting, spacey chords, it’s the perfect way to round off a diverse mix.

fabric 86 marks the start of what looks set to be a significant year for Eats Everything. He worked non-stop throughout 2015 to build his label and event series Edible, all whilst touring relentlessly. 2016 sees the release schedule for Edible picking up pace, whilst Eats has a collaboration with house legend Green Velvet lined up, as well as productions on both Edible and Pets Recordings. Touring-wise Eats will be as busy as ever, with shows already confirmed at Elrow, Bugged Out Weekender, Winter Social and Lost and Found.
