Astronauts, etc. feat. Toro y Moi – Rocket Man

toro y moi

In anticipation of their North American fall tour, Toro y Moi and Astronauts, etc. (Anthony Ferraro, keyboardist in Toro y Moi’s live band) have teamed up and released a dreamy cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man.” Noisey premiered the track, stating, “Oh you’re covering one of Elton John’s very best songs? Bold moves, guys, bold moves. Thing is, Oakland’s Astronauts, etc. and Toro y Moi-who are heading out on tour together next week-really nail it. Their rework is soft like cashmere on baby skin. Sweetly muted like Beck’s rework of ‘Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometimes,’ but with a funked up bass holding it all down and shivery synth middle eight that’s quite magic.”

Following much-lauded summer festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and FYF Fest, Toro y Moi’s North American tour, featuring openers Astronauts, etc., will kick off next week on September 19 at Portland’s Revolution Hall and continue with over 30+ dates, including appearances at Miami’s Ill Points Festival and Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest.

Last month, Toro y Moi released Samantha, a collection of 20 tracks, including collaborations with Kool A.D., Rome Fortune, Washed Out, and Nosaj Thing, among others. Samantha is available for free download here. Samantha follows What For?, Toro y Moi’s acclaimed ’70s pop-influenced fourth album.

Chaz Bundick aka Toro Y Moi unveiled  the video for “Empty Nesters“, the first single from What For?, out on April 7th 2015 on Carpark Records. Directed by Chaz himself. Pre-order the LP here and get “Empth Nesters” instantly.

What For? is a glimpse into the life of a guy trying to figure out what it all means. The music is influenced by bands like Big Star, Talking Heads, Tim Maia, Todd Rundgren, but it doesn’t quite sound like any of them in particular. And it isn’t trying to. It has that special something that Chaz imbues in every Toro Y Moi album, his personal filter on the world he experiences. So whatever message you take from the album, don’t forget that it’s good. As Chaz himself so candidly believes, “Good is good. Good finds its own audience.”

Chromeo – Come Alive feat. Toro y Moi

Almost a decade ago, the Canadian duo Chromeo introduced their unique blend of electrofunk to an exponentially growing global audience. White Women, Dave 1 and P-Thugg’s 4th studio album coming this spring on Atlantic, refines their signature 70’s and 80’s influenced quirky pop songs, masterfully crafted in the tradition of the finest R&B, disco and funk.

The newest edition in an ever growing and exciting list of collaborators is Toro y Moi, featured on their buoyant new single,“Come Alive”. “Toro is a new school funk disciple, like us” says the band. “Ever since we heard his music we wanted to unleash his inner Jermaine Stewart.” This is disco Chaz in a way you’ve never heard him before – stream below.

Montreal’s reigning loverboys will be previewing their infectiously catchy new record, featuring previously released singles “Over Your Shoulder” and “Sexy Socialite”, on the road this spring, along with playing some Chromeo classics.
