Factory Floor – 25 25 LP

factory-floor

Today (August 19) sees the release of Factory Floor’s sophomore album 25 25 via DFA Records. Stripped to a mesmerising dance of percussion, fragmented voice and melody, 25 25 captures the next vital stage in the evolution of one of the UK’s most restless and exploratory groups. Featuring lead singles “Dial Me In” and “Ya”, the album has garnered praise from the likes of NPR, Pitchfork, FADER, SPIN, MTV, Stereogum, The Verge, Nerdist, + many more.

Following the release of their debut album in 2013, Factory Floor – consisting of Nik Void and Gabriel Gurnsey – slimmed down to a duo. Having already boiled the scorched textures of their early singles down into their debut’s hallucinatory club-not-club stomp, they both seized the opportunity to voyage further along the pathway, mixing 25 25 with razor-sharp precision via David Wrench (FKA Twigs, Caribou).

Inspired by playing a growing number of late night club shows, the pair’s music gradually evolved into the sound captured on their second album and in their current live incarnation: a stark, ultra-minimalist and eerily soulful dancefloor pulse, yet one that still bears Factory Floor’s unmistakable hallmarks of hypnotic repetition and jagged, punkish intensity.

To celebrate the forthcoming release of 25 25, their sophomore LP out August 19th on DFA Records, FACTORY FLOOR release a captivating new video for their latest single “Ya” via Pitchfork and announce and ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) London Show Thursday August 25th.

Directed by Factory Floor and featuring sculptures by the duo’s Nik Void, the vibrant, hypnotic video for “Ya” reflects the group’s penchant for experimental modernism and dynamic minimalism:

“I was looking at the German New York artist Isa Genzken,” explains Void, “and thought I need to make a plaster synth! I like the idea of someone playing it under my instruction off camera then the synth take on a life of its own – like the true nature of modular synthesis”

In 2012 FACTORY FLOOR commenced a year-long residency as ICA Associates which manifested as a series of live collaborations that featured New York composer Peter Gordon, visual artist Hannah Sawtell and British soundtrack producer Simon Fisher Turner. The events sought to challenge the boundaries between collaboration and live improvisation.

Now the duo of Nik Void and Gabriel Gurnsey return to London’s ICA Theater Thursday August 25th to premiere material from their latest hi-energy minimalist dance exploration live. The event will also include special live performances from British visual artist Haroon Mirza, who is internationally acclaimed for his installations that examine the interplay between light and sound. He will be followed by Swedish artist Klara Lewis, who is recognized for her disorientating arrangements of field recordings combined with textured rhythms.

25 25 is the follow up to Factory Floor’s critically acclaimed 2013 self-titled debut. Stripped to a mesmerizing dance of percussion, fragmented voice, and melody, the album captures the next stage of evolution for one of the UK’s most restless and exploratory groups. “Ya” is the latest single to be taken from Factory Floor’s second studio album, 25 25, out August 19th via DFA Records. A mischief-inducing dancefloor gem, the new single comes on the heels of “Dial Me In” which the band shared last month.

25 25 is out August 19th via DFA and can be pre-ordered here.

Factory Floor – Dial Me In

factory floor

Factory Floor return in 2016 with 25 25, their second album for DFA and the follow up to their hugely acclaimed 2013 self-titled debut. With their music stripped to a mesmerising dance of percussion, fragmented voice and melody, 25 25 captures the next vital stage in the evolution of one of the UK’s most restless and exploratory groups. Today the band share ‘Dial Me In’, the album’s lead single that is available now on a limited 12″.

Following the release of their debut album Factory Floor in 2013, the band – consisting of Nik Void and Gabriel Gurnsey – slimmed down to a duo. Having already boiled the scorched textures of their early singles down into their debut’s hallucinatory club-not-club stomp, they both seized the opportunity to voyage further along the pathway, mixing the album with razor-sharp precision via David Wrench (FKA Twigs, Caribou).

Speaking of ‘Dial Me In’, Void says: “Being openly progressive has always been the Factory Floor way, be it via improvisational live shows, early Blast First releases, DFA reworks, or open studio collaborations and residencies.

‘Dial Me In’ was the first track Gabe and I wrote together for this record. At this time we were both exploring new set ups – some unfamiliar gear like modular systems, as well as various machines combined with regular old stuff like my Roland sampler, live drums and effected live vocals.

Our shows between 2014-2015 where steadily moving towards late night club stompers, and gradually our tools were becoming more and more mobile within two Peli cases wheeled across the continent. We were forever testing out changing sets from one place to the next. This single is all about transition, adjustment and transparency – something we needed to get out there so that dots can be joined and the next page can be turned ready for 25 25.”

25 25 is out 19th August 2016 via DFA and can be pre-ordered here. Live dates will be announced shortly.

Shura – White Light (Video + Factory Floor Remix)

SHURA APPROVED WL

Shura has premiered the video to forthcoming single ‘White Light’, as well as a brooding remix by Gabe Gurnsey of Factory Floor. ‘White Light’ will be released on July 24th via Polydor, and has already reached #1 on Hype Machine and received a Hottest Record from Annie Mac on Radio 1. With festivals to come at the likes of Latitude, Festival No.6, Bestival and Reading & Leeds, Shura’s UK headline tour – featuring her third ever London show at Electric Brixton on September 17th – is on sale now.

A bold step out of the bedroom-based R&B balladry which has quickly won her an impassioned following, the surreal video to ‘White Light’ was filmed in Cheddar Gorge and partly inspired by Shura’s twin brother – who now takes a starring role in the clip. Lyrically, while ‘White Light’ in part explodes the personal out into a sci-fi fantasy, it joins former single ‘2Shy’ in embracing that social weirdness which ultimately makes you unique.

“It’s like someone’s taken something really shiny and rubbed it with sandpaper,” Shura says of her instantly-recognisable sound, which – if ‘White Light’ is anything to go by – continues to evolve from her parents’ colourful musical household (Dad’s prog vinyl, her brother’s drum-and-bass DJ’ing) to Shura’s own learning curve on the acoustic open-mic circuit.

Shura is presently recording her debut album, ahead of the following live dates for the year ahead.

Factory Floor – How You Say (EP 2) [2014]

How You Say’ is the new single from Factory Floor. This is the second of two EPs and contains another fantastic set of new versions of the track, taken from their self-titled debut album.

Up first is a brand new version of the track, reworked by the band’s own Gabe Gurnsey with new percussion and a new mix. It is followed by a remix by Bookworms (L.I.E.S. / Confused House), which marks his return to DFA following an anxious remix of The Night Patrols by Larry Gus in 2013. It reinforces the deep and dark acidic sounds he has become so well known for, taking this hypnotic single and tweaking it out for maximum impact.

The package is completed with a faithful reinterpretation from Helena Hauff, who released her debut 12” single on Werkdiscs last year and quickly followed it up a new single under the alias Black Sites.

Factory Floor – How You Say (EP 1) [2014]

How You Say’ is the latest single from Factory Floor‘s Self-Titled LP. This is the first of two EPs releasing this month and contains a wide and wonderful selection of remixes.

This first EP contains new versions from Gunnar Haslam (L.I.E.S.) & Daniel Avery (Phantasy), who both released striking and acclaimed debut albums last year, as well as an assortment of heavily rotated 12” singles.

The EP also contains a remix from Invisible Conga People, which marks the return of this elusive act. They recorded a fan-fave 12” for DFA in 2011, and had not been heard from since until now.

Video: Factory Floor – How You Say

London trio Factory Floor has shared the video for their latest single “How You Say”, taken from their self-titled debut album. The “How You Say” Remixes EP is out on April 14 via DFA. Video concept by Dan Tombs & Nik Void.

Max Cooper – Impacts (Original + Factory Floor Gabe Gurnsey Remix)

After a decade-plus in the UK dance circuit, Max Cooper is ready to release his debut LP, Human, on March 14 via Fields. Below, you can stream the stop-start stomper dancefloor-ready "Impacts", plus a remix from Factory Floor drum guy Gabe Gurnsey, who has folded his band’s hypnotic acid tweaking into the original’s rasping beats.

Factory Floor – Turn It Up (Carl Craig / Laurel Halo Remixes)

Carl Craig and Laurel Halo have each reinterpreted the first single from Factory Floor‘s debut album. "Turn It Up" is turned inside out by Laurel Halo who slows it down and warps it into an almost unrecognizable shape. Carl Craig takes the skeleton of the song and makes it even more bare bones – minimal and slinky – stripping back most elements and doubling up on a thumping 4/4 heart beat. The band’s debut album for DFA has already become a breakout and critically acclaimed record of 2013. These stellar remixes help cap off a great year for the band and lead them into lots more to come in 2014.

Available now wherever digital downloads are sold. As always, High quality digital downloads available at DFA Direct.
