Maya Jane Coles – Don’t Leave / Nocturnal Sunshine – Foundation

maya

The simmering restlessness and fierce reputation of Maya Jane Coles’s career journey that has led to her decision to today release lead tracks from both her herself and her alter ego in one unanticipated drop is a young woman at the height of her artistic powers.

The multifaceted and seemingly unstoppable Maya Jane Coles today proves it is possible to propel forward a distinctive sound in more than one singular direction. Written, produced, and mixed entirely by Maya plus visually accompanied by Maya’s own artwork and photography and released on her own label I/AM/ME this is THE world of Maya Jane Coles on Maya’s terms.

The release is a confident creative expressive of revisiting the darker, more bass-driven productions with a heavy hip-hop and dub influence of her early studio work as Nocturnal Sunshine while also driving her prolific club sound in an experimental often sinister dance floor direction.

Nocturnal Sunshine has for many years been the British-Japanese producers go-to for exploring dubbier, bass-driven aesthetics; a sound that has she undoubtedly made her own with provocative and subtly commanding hits such as “Cant Hide The Way I Feel” and ‘Take Me There’ as well as an array of prolific remixes including The Orb, Alpines and Karin Park.

Here “Foundation” avoids any kind of conceptual framework yet follows Maya’s own personal narrative delivering on the same uncompromising genealogy that her 2015 Nocturnal Sunshine LP was born from – igniting excitement over a new full length Nocturnal Sunshine album that is lined up for 2019.

Daringly dark yet packed with drama and joy the dual track announcement comes from an artist who never shies away from progression. “Don’t Leave” Indulges in earthy, abstract tech house terrain and speeds into action with little regard for consequences.

Simultaneously dark and bright, Maya Jane Coles is an artist of great consistency. Untainted in her production and constant in her delivery she makes it clear that what was once considered a remix side-project has fully manifested itself into a parallel alter ego.

Fulfilling to the listening experience and rewarding to the seasoned Maya Jane Coles fan; the London based Producer/DJ upholds her craving of both the danceable sounds that sit in the house music spotlight as much as illuminating what is prowling in the shadows.

Maya Jane Coles – “Don’t Leave” / Nocturnal Sunshine – “Foundation” are both out now on I/AM/ME

Maya Jane Coles – Darkside feat. Chelou (MJC V2 Mix)

Maya Jane Coles releases a club mix of ‘Darkside’, the third EP to be taken from the independent artist’s highly praised new double LP ‘Take Flight’ – called by DJ Mag her “landmark album”. The package sees Maya add her own dancefloor-ready twist to the melancholic original that features London folk-electronica artist and regular collaborator Chelou.

‘Darkside’ is one in a string of releases to surface from the celebrated ‘Take Flight’ album and the latest to receive the remix treatment. This fresh new club edit is a testament to Maya’s unbreakable work ethic and prolific nature. Previous EPs such as ‘Won’t Let You Down’ and ‘Weak/Werk’ received global acclaim from FADER, Wonderland, Mixmag, Complex, as well as support from Pete Tong.

Maya’s ‘MJC V2 MIX’ prepares the dark and dubby original into a club ready weapon complete with earth-shattering kick drums which jostle through jittering percussion and shimmering, eerie vocals provided by Chelou.

Maya Jane Coles – Won’t Let You Down EP

maya jane coles.jpg

Maya Jane Coles returns with a new EP, ‘Won’t Let You Down’, taken from her forthcoming and highly anticipated sophomore album ‘Take Flight’ out later this year on her own I/AM/ME label.

Much more than just a DJ Maya Jane Coles is a producer, engineer and label boss. Maya is an independent artist in complete control of her own music, from writing, producing and arranging to even creating her own artwork – something of a rarity in today’s culture of co-producers, ghostwriters and engineers.

After her explosion onto the house scene back in 2010, Maya Jane Coles has blossomed into one of the industry’s most respected figures: picking up numerous awards including ‘Best producer’ and ‘Best DJ’ from the likes of Mixmag, DJ Mag and FACT!; making RA’s top 10 DJ Chart multiple times; amassing millions of plays online with a colossal 3.2 million Soundcloud followers, gracing over 20 magazine covers, and even taking the time to front Dr Martens AW16 campaign worldwide.

Maya’s credits also cover Drake & Nicki Minaj’s Grammy nominated ‘Truffle Butter’ – a song on the verge of Platinum in the US and that has already gone Silver in the UK, while her wider ventures into collaborations with disparate artists, like acoustic songwriter Chelou, has positioned Maya as totally unique – someone for whom genre never poses an obstacle.

As a DJ, Maya has played from Coachella to Glastonbury, headlined with her own event brands, and played in the Tate Modern, MOMA and even Brighton FC Stadium. An artist who’s seen it all in 40 + countries, Maya Jane Coles demonstrates unrivalled command of the best in electronic music, alongside a formidable work ethic.

Building from early releases on Dogmatik, Mobile and Hypercolour and remixing the likes of The XX, Bonobo, Little Dragon, Sia and Ella Fitzgerald along the way; Maya founded her own record label I/AM/ME, which has gone on to host Breach, Dense & Pika, and Wax Wings, as well as providing a liberated platform for Maya’s own music.

After her debut album, ‘Comfort’, appeared on I/AM/ME; an eponymous bass music driven album under her “Nocturnal Sunshine” alias soon followed, both to much critical acclaim. Now, on the cusp of her eagerly awaited return to the LP, ‘Take Flight’, Maya offers ‘Won’t Let You Down’ EP; an exciting taster of just how strong her next full-length is set to be.

Title track ‘Won’t Let You Down’ gets the EP underway, introducing psychic synth stabs surrounded by her ever endearing lucid atmospherics and impelling drums. ‘Cherry Bomb’ plays with vocal textures alongside immersive synths and heady drum programming, before ‘Round In Circles’ incorporates dub-inspired syncopated beats and intoxicating vocal atmospherics for a hypnotic track – sure to have a seismic impact on dance floors.

Pets Recording bosses Catz n Dogz provide a high-octane remix for ‘Won’t Let You Down’ whilst rising star Paride Saraceni, offers a darker prime-time techno alternative.

Proof that she is never one to rest on her laurels, ‘Won’t Let You Down’ occupies space where most producers cannot dare to dream of reaching – warming her ever growing fan base up for what is certain to be a momentous second album.

‘Won’t Let You Down’ is an exciting progression for Maya Jane Coles, acting as an appetizer for ‘Take Flight’ and the impact it will undoubtedly cause, not just in the electronic music world but beyond too.

Maya Jane Coles – Won’t Let You Down (Culoe De Song Remix)

Ballantine’s and Boiler Room’s True Music platform celebrates and supports artists that do it their way. With Maya Jane Coles at the helm, the True Music platform is travelling across South Africa, Russia and Spain, to create a remix EP working with fantastic talents in each country, starting with Johannesburg’s favourite, Culoe de Song.

The debut track from the ‘True Music EP’ sees Culoe remix ‘Won’t Let You Down’, an unreleased track from Maya’s forthcoming double album. Taking his signature deep, rolling house style, Culoe’s version pushes the track in a completely new direction.

Bringing this remix to life is this beautifully animated music video. Shot in Culoe’s hometown Johannesburg, it’s packed with clips from his incredible set at the recent True Music show there. So, sit back, hit play and see what happens when two forces of electronic music come together…

Maya Jane Coles said of the remix: “Culoe’s remix is completely different to the original – it’s great to hear his take on it. He’s another independent artist who’s super passionate about making music his own way and this really comes through. Definitely looking forward to working on our future True Music releases!”

Be sure to check out truemusic.boilerroom.tv for more info around the project and further releases. The full True Music EP will be released for free download in February 2017.

Polly’s iconic drawings are brought to life for the first time by Animator / Director Andy Baker for the video of Chelou’s, ‘Halfway To Nowhere’.

“One woman’s anxieties and insecurities lead her on a surreal journey of self discovery trapped in a grotesque and devilish manifestation of her subconscious. Lost in this dark and lonely world she is lead to confront her demons and finally make peace with herself. “Polly Nor

Kim Ann Foxman realigns her vision as a producer in a welcome return to her own New York based Firehouse Recordings label with her ‘It’s You That Drives Me Wild EP’.

The title track spins an intoxicating groove over Kim Ann’s vocals full of desire and lust, while ‘Give It All You Got’ fuses raw energy and dextrous percussion through her confident, evocative words. Close ally and regular cohort Maya Jane Coles seamlessly remixes ‘It’s You That Drives Me Wild’ with her signature sound. The mood suddenly becomes much tougher during ‘Magic Window’ wrapping up the latest offering from New York’s finest lady of electronic music.
