RY X and Frank Wiedemann reunite as Howling to present “Colure”, the sophomore full-length record from their joint musical enterprise. RY X, solo alternative artist and member of The Acid, and Frank, one half of Âme, bring fans a bigger, sharper follow-up to their debut, “Sacred Ground”. On “Colure”, the Berlin-based Wiedemann and Los Angeles-based RY X conjure transcendent creations out of their contrasting musical backgrounds and environments. The album is assuredly dualistic: electronic and acoustic sounds sit comfortably side-by-side, and big melodic hooks are laced into hypnotic club productions.

Kidswaste – Sleeping Pills (feat. KOLE)

French producer Kidswaste (aka Quentin Beauvois) is staking his claim as one of the most innovative and promising artists in electronic music. Barely in his 20s, the multi-instrumentalist and songwriter satisfies his creative needs through three separate projects —Kidswaste, Beauvois and Slow Hours (a collaborative effort with five other producers). Kidswaste’s music has seen him tour across North America over the past 18 months with appearances at historic venues and landmark festivals alike. Now, he is moving towards the next phase of his career with the release of his first single of 2019, “Sleeping Pills” featuring KOLE. “Sleeping Pills” is out now via Counter Records.

“Sleeping Pills” is probably one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. It’s about finding yourself totally overwhelmed by lots of things changing and growing in your life, between being in a long distance relationship and trying to realise your dreams. The outcome (metaphorically speaking) of the story is to find a vice or getaway to escape the never-ending loop of being stuck in your own mind and anxieties. I’ve actually worked with KOLE on a few tracks now, and I really love what she brought to this one.” – Kidswaste

Since beginning to release music under the name Kidswaste in 2015, Quentin has been developing his signature sound that he describes as a fusion between indie, electronic, folk and pop. He released his first  EP Spleen in 2017, garnering support from acclaimed dance music outlets Billboard, This Song is Sick, Dancing Astronaut, NESTHQ and many more. Additionally, his 2017 collaboration with Manila Killa “Tonight” has been streamed nearly 6 million times on Spotify alone and received three New Music Friday placements upon release.

With an extremely busy year of firsts behind him, Kidswaste is primed to carry that momentum with him throughout the year. Alongside the release, Kidswaste will join DROELOE on a leg of their upcoming tour, as well as a festival appearance at BUKU Music & Art Project in New Orleans.

Video: Maribou State – Kingdom feat. North Downs

Directed by David Horsburgh at Agile Films the video brings to life Maribou State’s ‘Kingdom (feat. North Downs)’. Drawing on the themes of their recent album “Kingdoms In Colour”, the visuals build a ‘universe of picture postcards in bloom’. “We wanted to create a video that echoed the track’s themes of travel and exploration,” explains Horsburgh, “playing with the ways in which people travelling can change and transform landscapes as well as themselves. So a mixed media collage approach really spoke to us; sourcing vintage footage from creative commons sources and then subverting it with VFX to turn it into something new. The flower motif from the band’s album artwork was the inspiration for the flowers that grow throughout the video; out of canyons, eyes and even on the moon!”

Taken from the album ‘Kingdoms In Colour’, released 7 September 2018 on Counter Records.

Maribou State – Kingdom feat. North Downs (Adesse Versions Remix)

Following a steady stream of remixes from the likes of Maceo Plex and DJ Tennis, Maribou State today release “Kingdom (feat. North Downs) (Adesse Versions Remix)”.

Having previously released on labels such as Numbers, Delusions Of Grandeur and Ostgut Ton (under his own name), he delivers a subtle re-work, drawing out the vocals of long-time Maribou State collaborator Jack Sibley AKA North Downs over a lean reconstruction of the original’s percussive, hand-clapped rhythms. “The original has fantastic drums, melodies and vocals, but with room for me to give it a little more energy” he explains. “This was one of the most enjoyable remixes I’ve worked on for a long time”.

The release follows the incredible sold-out performance at the Roundhouse, where Jack joined the band to perform the song live on stage against a backdrop of brand new live visuals and an expanded string quartet in addition to the 5-piece band. Their recently announced 5k capacity Brixton Academy show – on March 7th 2019 – has sold-out in a matter of weeks, charting the phenomenal success of the band since the release of their breakthrough debut album “Portraits” in 2015.

Chrome Sparks – In2 Your Love

Chrome Sparks (aka Jeremy Malvin) returns with new EP ‘Be On Fire’, released via Counter Records (a Ninja Tune imprint), the follow-up to his self-titled debut album released earlier in 2018. He takes the same all-inclusive, dreamily-realised approach, lacing together a patchwork of wide-reaching influences. On ‘June Lion’, an ecstatic arsenal of synths are layered over a half-time trap beat, building skywards to an overclocked conclusion. An ‘80s boogie groove is the bedrock of ‘Be On Fire’, voice-box vocals and lush keys adding to the smooth, downtempo feel. ‘Ultraviolet Rainbow’ sounds how you’d expect: rainbow-beam synths and bright-sparkling arpeggios, combined with a turbocharged hip-hop bounce. In comparison, ‘I Could Be The Voice Inside Your Head’ is woozy and relaxed, notes bending elastically in and out of shape, tinged with an air of melancholy.

Lead single ‘In2 Your Love’ is a sandblast of synths, heavy-hitting drums and lo-fi 80s soul, inspired by the idiosyncratic demos of George Smallwood, whose music he’s become obsessed with since a friend recently introduced it to him, and whose sampled vocal served as the starting point for the track. Malvin’s hip-hop-indebted, energy-drenched style lights up his source material, paying homage to Smallwood’s freewheeling spirit, while turning it into something new. “The result is a track that I feel pays homage to an under appreciated musical gem and surrounds it with a breath of new spirit,” Malvin says.
