Video: Tycho – Japan

Having recently announced their new album ‘Weather’ is due July 12th via Mom + Pop Music x Ninja Tune, Tycho are sharing their new single “Japan”.

The track comes in two forms, the first features the addition of vocals from Hannah Cottrell (Saint Sinner) and the second is an instrumental piece, which features the vivid signature soundscapes present in the classic Tycho sound.

Scott Hansen of Tycho said “Similar to ‘Pink & Blue’ the instrumental versions are not just the songs with vocals muted, they are different arrangements with different instrumentation and melodies in place of the vocals. I wanted to explore the idea of approaching songs from two entirely different perspectives.”

With visuals from director Charles Bergquist, Hansen said the following about the new song “I had just returned from spending some time in Hakone, Japan with my wife’s Japanese relatives. I was thinking a lot about the kinds of electronic music instruments I had been using when I first started making music in the late ‘90s. With Japan I was trying to recapture a part of that sound and combine it with the imagery and experiences from my trip to Hakone. I sent the song to Hannah with nothing more than the title of Japan and she wrote all of the lyrics.”

Tycho – Easy

Tycho’s 2016’s GRAMMY® nominated, Billboard-topping album, ‘Epoch’ saw huge success for the San Francisco-based group, building to two sold out nights at London’s 2000-capacity Electric Brixton followed by a date at The Roundhouse. Today, Tycho give a first glimpse at new material with brand new track “Easy.”

“Easy” is available now on Mom + Pop Music x Ninja Tune and sees Tycho’s trademark vibrant, cinematic electronics topped with hushed vocal descants, adding a new layer of instrumentation and hinting at a new direction for their next chapter, which is set to unfold over the summer of 2019. “Music can transport us to other realities but can also ground us firmly within ourselves” says Scott Hansen, Tycho’s primary composer, songwriter and producer. “After a trilogy of records spent exploring the outer reaches of experience I am focusing inward to reveal a human side to the music.”

“The past 13 years have seen Tycho evolve from the part-time solo project of a graphic designer into a band that achieved things far beyond any of our wildest expectations” he continues. “My journey as an artist has been defined by an iterative cycle with each album building on and refining an overarching vision. ‘Easy’ is about coming to terms with my past and defining a clear vision moving forward. It’s a comforting voice that reminds you not to get so lost in the work, but to take it easy and enjoy the ride. ‘Easy’ is the bridge to the future.”

Video: Tycho – See feat. Beacon

Tycho has announced the release of ‘See (Feat. Beacon), the first ever song featuring vocals from the GRAMMY® Award-nominated dance/electronic project. The track is available at all digital music retailers and streaming services today.

‘See (Feat. Beacon)’ began its journey as a instrumental track on Tycho’s acclaimed 2014 album, AWAKE, but soon took on a new form with a bubbly remix from fellow Ghostly International artists Beacon, melding the original track’s serene energy with buoyant dance grooves and gossamer vocals from the New York-based duo’s own Thomas Mullarney III. 2017 saw Tycho and Mullarney team up onstage for stellar live renditions of “See” during Tycho’s remarkable Coachella sets – the band’s first ever performances to see them joined by a vocalist. “See (Feat. Beacon)” was soon re-recorded as a proper collaboration, uniting Tycho’s mesmerizing melodies and stuttering percussion with Beacon’s trademark vocal approach, resulting in an astonishing and altogether original new sound from both acclaimed outfits.

tycho

Tycho’s Epoch is the final album in the trilogy beginning with 2011’s Dive, then 2014’s Awake and culminating with the new album. This period between Dive and Epoch marks a significant maturation for Scott Hansen’s continually expanding project, one that has taken him from a solo performer and bedroom artist to fronting a live 4-piece band on large stages across the world.

Epoch hones the sonic aesthetic of Dive while drawing on the kinetic energy of Awake, it explores darker themes and new musical territory.

Tycho – Epoch LP

Tycho releases their brand new album Epoch. This is the final album in the trilogy beginning with 2011’s Dive, then 2014’s Awakeand culminating with this year’s Epoch (Ghostly International). This period between Dive and Epoch marks a significant maturation for Scott Hansen’s continually expanding project, one that has taken him from a solo performer to fronting a live 4-piece band on large stages across the world.

Epoch hones the sonic aesthetic of Dive while drawing on the kinetic energy of Awake, it explores darker themes and new musical territory. Earlier this summer Tycho released their first single ‘Division‘ and just last week released their second single and title track, ‘Epoch.‘ The surprise album is available digitally and for physical pre-order now.

Listen to ‘Epoch’ in full here:

When discussing the surprise element of this release Hansen said, “I’ve never been fond of handing in an album then waiting 4 months for it to be released. I wanted to be more connected to the people consuming the music. There is a kind of visceral fulfillment you get from sharing something that you’ve just created with other people. That’s a very satisfying feeling as an artist” Hansen continues, “All art is in some way shaped by the current state of the world around the person creating it so there’s a element of zeitgeist built into any album. We just finished mastering the album so it will be a month old when people hear it. I’m hoping people get a sense that this music is directly connected to the time they are experiencing it in.”

Epoch was produced and recorded by Hansen predominantly in his home studio in Berkeley, CA. The album was arranged alongside long time collaborator and partner in the project, Zac Brown. Brown contributed bass and guitar parts to the songwriting process. Rory O’Connor performed drums on the album.

Hansen sees Epoch as a multi-dimensional artistic vision at the confluence of his graphic design work via ISO50 and music with Tycho. The graphic presentation of album artwork is as important as the music itself. The keystone is the central image of Epoch and the colors scheme red and black. This is a stark contrast to the almost rainbow palette of Awake. Album art is above and full track listing below.

2. Horizon

Tycho – Epoch

Tycho has revealed ‘Epoch, the latest single from Scott Hansen’s continually expanding project and the keystone of the forthcoming album. The new album is at once a departure and an evolution for Tycho; honing the sonic aesthetic of Dive while drawing on the kinetic energy of Awake, it explores darker themes and new musical territory.

The release of ‘Epoch’ comes two months after the release of the song ‘Division.’ These two songs are the first new material from Tycho since the acclaimed 2014 release, Awake. Around the release of Awake Tycho performed in over 30 countries worldwide including major festival appearances at Coachella, Outside Lands, and Bonnaroo in the U.S., as well as Falls Festival in Australia, and Latitude in the UK. This fall Tycho is on tour playing several U.S. cities as well as a performance at Treasure Island festival in October.

Tycho – Apogee (RJD2 Remix)

tycho

After recently announcing ‘Awake Remixes’ LP, Tycho has shared a new RJD2 remix of ‘Apogee’, which is streaming online now. The forthcoming record is set for release on January 15th via Ghostly International, with the physical release on May 20th.

RJD2 takes the swift-kicking ‘Apogee’ and transforms it into tranquil instrumental funk.

Awake represented a high-water mark for Scott Hansen, the San Francisco musician better known asTycho. Described by Hansen as, “in many ways, the first True Tycho record,” Awake announced the arrival of Tycho as a full band, and it found Hansen streamlining the group’s sound, focusing on the drums and aiming to capture the energy and power of the group’s live set. The story of Awake arrives at its natural conclusion with this 12” of remixes, on which Hansen’s songs are re-interpreted by producers who make the songs their own while retaining all of their core elements. The digital release is out January 15th on Ghostly International, with the physical release set for a May 20th release.
In the hands of Few Nolder, ‘Montana’ becomes tense and driving, four-on-the-floor beat undergirding bright, rippling synths. Baio, who splits his time between solo work and his role as bassist in Vampire Weekend, gives ‘Plains’ a kind of soulfulness, adding a driving rhythm to the original’s beatless ambience and dropping in snatches of vocal for texture and warmth.

Additional remixes from Com Truise, Christopher Willits, Bibio and Beacon, which had been previously released, have been added to this package. Taken together, ‘Awake Remixes’ offer a parallel narrative for Tycho’s artistic breakthrough. Additionally, the digital only ‘Deluxe Version’ of ‘Awake’ now includes the original version of ‘Awake’ and all eight remixes available on the ‘Awake Remixes’ album.

Pre-orders are available at The Ghostly StoreISO50, and these fine retailers.
