Tourist – We Stayed Up All Night feat. Ardyn

GRAMMY Award-winning composer / producer Tourist is gearing up to release his long awaited follow up to 2016’s debut album U. Annie Mac premiered the first single “We Stayed Up All Night (ft Adryn)” at BBC Radio 1. “We Stayed Up All Night” combines bright vocals from collaborator Ardyn with the breezy, laid-back instrumentation that Tourist has become known for. Hauntingly catchy, it simmers with optimism and youth, just in time for summer and more new music to unfold.

London-based songwriter and electronic musician William Phillips makes yearning, bittersweet dance tracks under the name Tourist. He’s considered an “artist’s artist”, with fans such as Flume and Porter Robinson supporting his releases. After the self-titled debut EP (2012), Tonight EP (2013), and Patterns EP (2014) featuring guest appearances by Lianne La Havas and Will Heard, as well as high-profile remixes for Chvrches, Haim, Christine and the Queens under his belt, Tourist went on to win the GRAMMY for co-writing the Sam Smith hit “Stay With Me”, and he released his debut album U (2016) to critical acclaim and support from outlets like Vice, Billboard and Rolling Stone Australia.

The single, “Run” landed with #1 spots on BBC Radio 1 dance charts and Hype Machine. This was soon followed by a string of sold out shows as a live favorite across the United States, Europe and Australia, including major festival appearances at Glastonbury, Coachella (twice) and Bestival.

Here’s what’s next for William Phillips aka Tourist: “With this new music I wanted to make something that was more reflective of who I am now and how my life has changed over the past year. I moved out of my windowless studio and started writing from home again. I think subconsciously I’ve started writing more joyous, colourful music and I’ve loved being more collaborative once again. These tracks are my favourite music I’ve produced so far, Tourist will always change with each release and I’ve loved pushing the sound into a new place.”

“Run”

“Too Late”

“U”

Last month, Tourist revealed his new music video for “U” (see here) and announced his February 2017 Australian headline shows. The video for “U” a co-direct project by frequent collaborator Jacob Robinson and multi-talent Dillon Moore.

A hypnotising visual piece, the video was directed by Jacob Robinson, the creative director who designed the U album cover and has worked with Tourist on a multitude of releases.

The visual translation follows on from the James Lewis-directed and Jacob Robinson art directed video for “Too Late,” which came off the back of the BBC Radio 1 playlisted track and Hype Machine #1 offerings, “Run” and “To Have You Back.”

Picking up a GRAMMY last year for his co-writer role on Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”, Tourist wrote debut album U over the course of several years. Taking the listener through the beginnings of a relationship to the parting of ways, the 10-track offering takes a more stripped back approach, following previous singles and EPs including 2015’s “Holding On” (ft. Josef Salvat & Niia) which clocked over 1.6 million SoundCloud streams.

Having toured his exquisite album throughout Europe and the U.S, including Pitchfork, Panorama and Bestival, fans will be treated to seeing this classically trained instrumentalist and producer perform his album live.

Following electrifying live appearances at Coachella Festival, Disclosure’s Wild Life festival and Park Life earlier this year and revealing a new album track “Waves” over the weekend (stream/download it below), Tourist (William Phillips) reveals the video for his current single (out 7/24) “Holding On” feat. Josef Salvat and Niia.

Directed and choreographed by Holly Blakey, the video follows a couple as they move between intimacy and intensity, the dynamics explained further by Holly below:

When I heard “Holding On” I was drawn to the way Tourist was presenting a love song (if we talk of it in it’s basic form) but was addressing something more subtle in the subject. There is a boy and a girl and they sing of either each other or someone else, something we never really find out and I liked that idea.

I wondered about these relationships we create throughout life and how our actions can be so disproportionate to what we’re trying to express or articulate, we can act in ways completely opposite to our intention. And then ultimately, if we had to pull it all down to a few basic actions what would they look like?” – Holly Blakey

Starting 2015 with a Coachella performance and a GRAMMY “Song of The Year” win for his part in co-writing Sam Smiths’ global smash “Stay With Me”, Tourist is at work on his debut album which will come out via Interscope Records while playing shows this summer including Sonar, Glastonbury and Reading festivals:

TOURIST live shows:
6/20 – Barcelona, Spain @ Sonar Festival
6/26 – Somerset, UK @ Glastonbury Festival
8/23 – Biddinghuizen, The Netherlands @ Lowlands Festival
8/29 – Reading, UK @ Reading Festival
8/30 – Leeds, UK @ Leeds Festival
9/5 – Stradbally, Ireland @ Electric Picnic

Tourist – Holding On (Todd Edwards + Braxton Remixes)

Here’s a couple of remixes of Tourist’s current single ‘Holding On‘ featuring Niia and Josef Salvat. One comes from longstanding house legend Todd Edwards, turning in a jacked-up beat version positioning it undeniably in classic house territory.

The next comes from newcomer Braxton who overloads the piano lead and maintains the soulful exchange between Niia and Josef to make for a touching upbeat remix. The single is released May 24th.

Video: Tourist – Illuminate feat. Years & Years

London’s producer William Phillips aka Tourist unveiled this hypnotic animated video for his latest single “Illuminate”, featuring vocals from Olly Alexander of Years & Years. Directed by Nicolas Ménard.

In 1992, a man receives love letters in Korean. Since Google Translate doesn’t exist yet, he’s left confused. What could this mean? Graphic aesthetic influenced by video games X (Gameboy) and Super World Runner (NES).

Tourist – Illuminate feat. Years & Years

Tourist - 2

Here’s the new single from Tourist featuring Years & Years entitled ‘Illuminate’. He revealed new track “Wait” a couple of weeks back, a deeper and more abrasive approach akin to Jon Hopkins. With the new single, Tourist exercises his more conventional pop role, working with Years & Years to deliver the top-line as he did with Lianne La Havas on his Patterns EP earlier in the year.

As with the track’s title, the arpeggiated synths certainly convey a neon glow and work as a distinct contrast to ‘Wait’, exemplifying the diverse range of Tourist’s approach to his production.
